It wasn't just that lots of big people died, it was that the news didn't stop.

Lots of musicians, but a stroke, a husband, and Rich Conaty on Dec 30.

He was a living, exciting, vital link to the music of the 20's and 30's.

Why is it that being on the listening end of a 40 year conversation is so amazingly transformative? As if he was a bigger part of life than we realized.

I wil admit (brag) about proposing to him. It was kind of a casual joke, but he loved going out to Bed & Breakfasts, so he came up to my hometown.  I was on crutches, he drove his fancy car, and with all the snow, it was especially hard to park.

I miss him already.

Gilmore Girl Con

In the extended reboot series, Rory has a one night stand with a Wookie she met in line (we do not get to meet this guy).

Later, when she is pressed for innovative story ideas for an online article-of-the-moment, she offers up her experience.  And is then told it is passé.

She then feels as if she is "behind". As if everyone has already gone through this stage of life. 

As if it is a requirement to have your fun at a Comic Con. And if you never go, it is important to know what you've missed. And how dismissable it is. 

Or not.

I think that Comic Cons surprise people, and irbid the surprise that people tend to give short shrift to. Surprised by Joy, indeed.

Minecraft Con

At work, someone took time off to fly to California.

To volunteer at a Minecraft Con.

Because "why not?"

And because everyone has their THING.

(He's quiet, but now he exists at a whole new level of interesting for me now.  He has a GROUP)

The Play's The Thing

Working on plays, novels, blogs and mostly work work lately.

The characters are still alive, however.  No worries.

San Diego Comic Con

There was a stark division this month between the joy that occurred At the San Diego Comic Con and the horror show that was the RNC.

Both dealt in imaginary superheroes saving a weakened public from evil.

Only the RNC was trying to paint the evil as reality.

Just remember, in Back to the Future, the dark version of 1985 was one in which a character based on the Orange Menace is in power.

I'd rather live in the world of the San Diego Comic Con, where justice is still a virtue.

I don't even understand 50 years, but it's an excellent bookend.

I spoke to your mother again, the one who wants to go from 2 actors to 3. For a reading series.

Yes.

Possible.

Re figuring in my mind as we speak.

I speak.

Because you are unborn.

We do not understand fame

My first thought was of a great fall, perhaps inevitable, from Rock Star to teacher. But maybe the reverse is true.

Maybe we start as fame hungry and become teachers.

Wisdom rather than blinding love and decent rhythm.

An Alternate Version: THE TRUTH IN MY HEAD

So the deep inspiration for this play, Comic Con, has also inspired me in different directions.

In addition to a factual, non-fiction book,  there is another play that is awakening.  Especially these past few weeks.

Another 2 hander, with 2 more people possibly in the background, a DEEPER discussion.

The truth in my head is not the same as the truth in your head.

(And no, I haven't done the revisions yet!)

I have found "Baltimore Waltz" by Paula Vogel.  Which I've owned for 20 years, at least!
